The seminar provided an important opportunity to engage with representatives from Caribbean States on the mandate, role and relevance of the IHFFC as a permanent mechanism established under Article 90 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions.
The Commission emphasized the importance of strengthening respect for international humanitarian law, promoting dialogue with States that have not yet recognized the competence of the IHFFC, and supporting regional efforts to advance the domestic implementation of IHL. The discussions in Barbados reaffirmed the value of cooperation, prevention and fact-finding as tools to uphold humanity, dignity and the rule of law, including in situations of armed conflict.
