IHFFC First Vice-President highlights role of Good Offices in promoting compliance with IHL at 2025 Sanremo Round Table

Dr. Elżbieta Mikos-Skuza, First Vice-President of the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission (IHFFC), took part in the 48th Round Table on Current Issues of International Humanitarian Law, held by the Institute of International Humanitarian Law in Sanremo, Italy, from 10 to 12 September 2025.

The Round Table, dedicated to the theme “From Peace to War and Back: Putting IHL at the Center”, gathered leading experts, practitioners, and policymakers to explore how international humanitarian law (IHL) can guide transitions between conflict and peace.

Dr. Mikos-Skuza delivered a well-received presentation on “The International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission as a Mechanism of Restoring an Attitude of Compliance with IHL – Focus on Good Offices”. She underscored the Commission’s unique role in fostering dialogue and trust between parties to conflict and in supporting adherence to IHL.

Her remarks sparked strong engagement from participants, prompting numerous questions and lively exchanges both in the plenary session and in bilateral discussions during the conference.

The IHFFC remains committed to strengthening respect for IHL worldwide and stands ready to support States and parties to armed conflict in building confidence, enhancing compliance with IHL, and ultimately alleviating human suffering.

There are fifteen members of the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission.
